contents: sparrow faces off with the young man from the lake memory, both of them pumped up and excited. what follows is some bizarre form of a cock fight, but one that the creatures are just as enthusiastic about as the two humans. Sparrow's creature is a 'Piplup' nicknamed 'Arlen', and the boy's is a 'Turtwig'. for such small things, the Pokemon are pretty damn strong and Sparrow and the boy are dodging moving to avoid getting in the way of the battle. she and Arlen win easily, but other than good-natured grumbling, the boy and Turtwig take the loss gracefully.
her and the boy's names are obscured.
effects: ● +30 animal affinity ● much more interested in friendly competition ● positive that the boy is a very dear friend to her
wow cynthia-senpai is so cool and calm and smart and pretty
content: Sparrow is walking through a city (and is right across from a bizarre looking building with flimsy trees in front of it), and is approached by a really classy lady with long blonde hair, who strikes up a conversation with her. the lady is familiar with whoever gave Sparrow her "Pokédex", and is also a Trainer!! she gives Sparrow some verbal encouragement, and then gives her a HM to let her Pokémon cut through trees, to help her fill the Pokédex! the lady then leaves, asking Sparrow to give her regards to the Professor.
all names are still obscured.
effects: ● holy shit that's a really beautiful lady ● wowow she's friendly and confident and helpful!! ● +50 homolust ● the start of a huge crush, if anyone who sees it recognizes the telltale dokis and blushing
contents: Sparrow is in a very dark cave, rummaging in her bag until she finally pulls out a case with weird little biscuit things in it. she shakes a red one out and then stands up with a smile and looks up at... this Pokemon. it's over twenty feet in length and looks pretty fucking intimidating, but Sparrow is not afraid in the slightest and pats its golden nose... thing affectionately before offering it the Poffin. it eats the treat right out of her hand and makes a low screechy noise of content before bumping the flat of its golden head thing against her in a weird ass nuzzle.
it looks distinctly cooler than it did a few seconds ago...
the Pokemon is clearly thought of with the name "Giratina".
effects: ● even less animal/creature fear than before, holy shit ● some pokemon eat poffins!! ● giratina is totally cute and precious wowowowow ● my helldragon is the cutest thing ever
content: Sparrow is on a stage with rose creature along side her. Sparrow herself is in a fancy dress and the Pokemon, Roselia, has some spiffy accessories on and the both of them are brimming with excitement and energy. Sparrow guides him into elegant displays that get the crowd cheering and watch their rivals try to out do them. despite being the in the background compared to Roselia, Sparrow is still thrilled to be on stage with him, and when the Contest wraps up, they're declared the winners. she could burst with pride and joy as they receive their ribbons, and throws her arms around the Roselia and hugs it.
effects: ● i do some cool performing/competing with a Pokemon called Roselia ● we're really damn good!! ● being on stage makes me really happy! ● i like friendly competition!!
content: the memory isn't terribly long; Sparrow is walking through a forest, the trees so dense only little patches of sunlight shine down, when something resting in her bag starts to shake. she takes it out, revealing it to be a red and blue patterned Egg, and holds onto it gently until the shell breaks open. after brushing the loose shards away from the small creature that had hatched, it opens its eyes, blinks a few times, and then focuses on Sparrow's face.
it beams with delight and waves its stubby arms excitedly, then snuggles into her arms cozily. the entire time, Sparrow is giddy and excited and just as happy as the little Pokemon the entire time.
effects:● cute things come from Eggs ● i travel with cute things and hella love them ● if anyone hurts this togepi i'll punch them
content: a young man about Sparrow's age (and familiar, if one has seen some of her earlier memories) prepares to bolt into tall grass. Sparrow doubts this idea will go well, but knows better than to try to talk him out of it and decides to run into the grass with him despite her reservations - the tall grass is dangerous, and she would sooner go with him than let him do something dangerous alone.
before either of them can so much as take a step, a very stern voice shouts for them to stop and the both of them freeze and quickly turn to face the speaker. an older man with white hair quickly approaches them (the blond boy quickly backs up to stand by Sparrow's side) and stares them down while reminding them that they were about to do something incredibly dumb. the old man is intimidating, and she has the feeling that he's a person who is very hard to fool. the three of them ellipse for a moment, not saying a word, before the boy turns to whisper to her about who the old man is: Professor Rowan, who she immediately knows is a Pokemon Professor. she's surprised that such a famous researcher is in the area, and a little pleased. if he's here, they won't need to go looking for him to get Pokemon! talk about convenient.
Rowan paces and mutters for a bit about why Sparrow and her friend were willing to go into the dangerous tall grass: they wanted Pokemon partners of their own! he muses that their worlds would change if they met Pokemon and wonders if he should set them on that path to change before abruptly turning and striding up to them to ask if they love Pokemon.
"Yes. I love Pokemon!"
Sparrow doesn't hesitate to answer, full of certainty. she loves Pokemon with all her heart, and the boy is quick to agree with just as much fervor. the Professor asks them the same question, and Sparrow feels faintly irritated - they just answered him, didn't they? this time it's her companion who blurts their answer: that no matter how many times they're asked that question, the answer will always be that they truly love Pokemon.
Rowan's face is hard to read as he quietly comments on what they were about to do, and that it concerns him to think of what such reckless people would do with Pokemon. Sparrow's heart drops and she swallows hard. is he going to refuse to introduce them to Pokemon of their own because of their recklessness? what kind of life would they live without Pokemon at their sides?
then, the boy tries to take all the blame for their attempt onto himself, insists that Sparrow should receive a Pokemon still; she feels a surge of fondness and affection for him, but knows she can't do that. the two of them are an all or nothing deal, and she wouldn't forgive herself if she let him take all the blame. it was his idea, but she was willing to go along with it, so they should both be punished if the Professor decided to. so, she punches him, hard, in the side for his dumb, noble attempt.
at the boy's words, Rowan's opinion of them seems to change. he'll entrust them with Pokemon after all, he says, and apologizes for putting them through that test before asking them to promise that they will not recklessly endanger themselves again. she thinks he's a bit like a grandfather now, looking after hotblooded young people.
Rowan puzzles over where something is until a boy in a snazzy red beret runs up behind him with a briefcase he left behind. the new boy starts when Rowan explains that he plans to give Sparrow and her friend their own Pokemon and says something about the Pokemon they brought with them being crucial. it makes the blond boy happy to hear that, and he has a stupid grin on his face (one that mirrors the grin Sparrow can't fight back either) as he tells Sparrow she can choose first. after meeting the three Pokemon in the briefcase (a Turtwig, a Chimchar and a Piplup), she picks the Piplup with an overwhelming sense of happiness at this precious first meeting. as she holds the Pokeball with her new partner in it to her chest, the boy chooses the Turtwig and the Professor addresses them both again.
he congratulates them on their excellent choices (though she thinks there's no such thing as a bad choice when it comes to Pokemon), and explains that the Pokemon in their care are unfamiliar with the world at large, just like their new Trainers, so he hopes that they'll do well together (learn together and grow together, become stronger and wiser together). he invites them to visit his lab in Sandgem if they run into any trouble before he leaves with the beret boy following behind him.
as they watch him walk away, the blond boy comments that Professor Rowan is actually very nice, much different from the stern and scary person he seems to be on TV.
the only name that isn't blurred out is Professor Rowan's.
effects: ● will be more cautious before doing something she knows is dangerous ● increased diligence in caring for the team Pokemon ● this well respected professor saw something in us that impressed him!! self-confidence boost. ● best friends do stupid stuff together so neither has to do it alone.
content: You are in Canalave City during the morning, entering a small house near the docks (without knocking, or knowing the inhabitants, which feels like a normal thing to do). In the house, on a makeshift bed on the ground level, a small boy lays unconscious while his mother hovers over him. When you approach, you over hear him mutter "Dar... Dark... is watching... me..." while he twists and thrashes in his sleep. 'Is he having a nightmare?' You wonder as you ask the mother what's wrong.
"I never thought our boy would fall into this endless nightmare." She says, with dark circles under her eyes. "It's happened in the past in Canalave... There were people who never woke up from their nightmares... ...That is, until they were awoken using something called the Lunar Wing. My husband went to find a Lunar Wing on Fullmoon Island, but he failed. Does it take a Trainer to do that? We feel so frustrated by this..." She turns her attention back to her son and you promptly rush out the door to find the father.
As luck would have it, you don't have to go far; The man is a Sailor standing on the docks, in front of a large ship. He looks like he hasn't slept in days but a faint glimmer of hope enters his eyes when you introduce yourself and ask him to take you to Fullmoon Island. "...You... You're going to Fullmoon Island for us?" He sounds like he can barely believe it. You simply say yes and he lights up. "We're both counting on you! Only you can awaken my son from his awful nightmare... Please, I need the Lunar Wing from Fullmoon Island to awaken him! I went, but I failed to find it... Anchors aweigh!" You don't mind him telling you the same story his wife did at all, and follow him onto his boat. He casts off immediately and you leave through Canalave's famous canal.
It takes a couple hours to reach the island even at top speed, longer than it would take by flight, and the sun is high in the sky when Eldritch (the sailor, who introduced himself during the boat trip) carefully steers his ship into a small spot just large enough to fit his boat and helps you hop onto the stairs nearby. You waste no time in running up the stairs and across the island, through the trees until you reach a shaded clearing. little light shines through the treetops, but there's enough to notice a strange puddle shaped like a crescent moon, along with a beautiful Pokemon that floats serenely in the air. You walk up to her (you're not sure why you think the Pokemon is a girl, but it feels like its right) and reach out to touch her-
And the moment your fingers brush against her feathers, she floats higher and higher and higher up in the air before flying away, leaving a sparkling something on the ground where she had been just moments before. You pick it up and see its a beautiful feather - the Lunar Wing you came here for. You look up and yell "Thank you!" before spinning on your heel and racing through the trees again until you reach Eldritch.
"That Pokemon you met was the Lunar Pokemon... I've heard tales of it flying from place to place throughout Sinnoh." He says in awe, looking in the direction that Pokemon flew off for a few seconds longer before looking to you and catching sight of the feather in your hand. "Oh! That sparkle... So, that's the Lunar Wing... Thank you... That will wake my son from the nightmare..." He leads you back onto the boat and heads back to Canalave at top speed.
When you reach the city, you don't even wait for the boat to fully stop before leaping off it and onto the dock, and then running to his home. You approach the boy's bed again and your Lunar Wing begins to glow and as the glow grows stronger, the grimace on his face disappears, leaving him peaceful for a few moments before he wakes up. Eldritch bursts through the door a second later and you step to the side to let him check on his son.
"Oh, my gosh! You're awake! Oh, my son..." He sounds near tears, smiling in relief. "I... I don't know what to say..." He turns to face you. "Thank you! We'll never forget you!" He promises before looking back to the little boy. "Seeing you back to normal makes me feel great! I've regained my spirit as a Sailor! Come sail with me later!" He laughs as he heads out the door; maybe to make sure he docked his boat properly in his rush. "Thank you! We can't thank you enough, but thank you!" the mother clasps your hand in hers for a moment.
The boy shivers in his bed and whispers to you, "I couldn't wake up... I saw it... It was a scary dream... It was a dark place... And there was a dark Pokemon..." And then he adds in a louder voice, "But Daddy, Mommy... I could always hear your voices..." You ruffle his hair, glad to have been able to help him, and walk out the door.
content: You walk into a room and step onto the blue panel on the floor; it whirs to life and lifts you up to another level where you see an open doorway at the far end. As you approach it, your heart is racing because this is what you and your Pokemon have been training for for so long and you're finally here and ready to battle Sinnoh's Champion...!
You check on your Pokemon before stepping through the doorway, making sure (for the tenth time, you know) that they're all healthy and their status effects are cured before squaring your shoulders and walking through it with your head held high.
In the new room, a familiar woman is waiting for you and your heart beats faster; She smiles at you as she speaks.
"Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. And the Distortion World. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you."
She gives you a look you recognize by now, one full of excitement for the coming battle. "But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"
With that said, the battle begins and there's never a lull in it; You're both on the attack, both of your Pokemon (she fights with a Spiritomb, a Roserade, a Togekiss, a Lucario, a Milotic and a Garchomp; you fight with an Empoleon (Arlen), a shiny Luxray (Tova), a Togekiss (Esen), a Garchomp (Adelinde), a Glaceon (Patil) and a Spiritomb (Angra)) fighting with everything they've got. You know your Pokemon well enough by now to know they're having as much fun as you are. It's a good thing the Champion's room is so durable, too, with all the attacks flying everywhere (fire and razor sharp leaves, blizzards and torrents of water, electricity and earthquakes, just to name a few things that are used in the battle).
When ███████ is down to her last Pokemon, she seems more excited than ever, declaring "I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!" as she sends out her final partner.
You're even more excited now than you were before; The goal you've been chasing since you began your journey is right there waiting for you, and--
The memory ends right there, before the battle ends.
what is learned: ● shit, i'm a great Trainer ● and my Pokemon are the best ● that hot lady is the Champion ● i did a thing at Mt. Coronet
effects: ● self-confidence boost ● crush on Cynthia gets bigger ● +40 wanting to see her Pokemon team again.
content: Marley stands to your left, staring at the huge white tablet ahead of you (Professor Oak is there too, of course, but he might as well not be as far as Marley is concerned). She takes a touches your arm so you turn around to face her, tearing your gaze from the Professor and the stone.
In her quiet, level voice, she explains that she doesn't like to talk. Even though she chooses her words carefully, they may still hurt someone by accident, and when she thinks of that she clams up. That's why this Pokemon is so wonderful to her: It conveys gratitude in a nice way, one that can't be misunderstood. With that said, she rushes ahead of you to stand next to the tablet and says it has a strange feeling to it.
You'd be lying if you said that didn't pique your curiosity even more than it already had been and so you follow only a few steps behind and greet the Professor. He tells you what he has learned about the tablet so far (which isn't much, to be honest) before explaining the purpose if the stone: It's meant for a Trainer to write their thoughts after an adventure, after growing as a person. Which is why he asked you for your help: You've done so many things, met so many different humans and Pokemon, and all of those experiences have shaped you into the person you are now. You fit the description perfectly.
So, he continues as he runs a hand along the edge of the tablet, he would like you to sincerely tell him who affected you the most out of all of them. Or, more accurately, who you most want to thank.
The question catches you off guard. Who do you want to thank most? How do you choose between all the people you've ever met? You think of your mother, of your best friend, of your Pokemon who support you through thick and thin, and feel like this is an impossible choice.
It takes you a couple minutes to find your answer, and when you do you hold your head high and tell him you most want to thank your family. You cannot choose between the most precious people in your life, so this is the answer that makes the most sense to you. Family isn't limited to your relatives. Family is made up of people you love and trust and that includes ***** and your team.
You write your answer on the smooth rock with a smile, but the moment you're done a blinding light envelops all of you and leaves you blind for a few seconds.
When the blurs in your vision disappear, you're amazed to see the entire area is now covered with brilliantly coloured flowers. Beside you, Marley gasps
[ in this memory, you are nine years old and you are sitting on the roof of your house with your best friend. you've done this a couple times before on clear nights, so you can see the stars clearly, and your mothers don't mind so long as one of their Pokemon keeps an eye on you (Aunt Sophia's Chatot Gabby is perched on the ridge of the roof for this reason).
you spend a few minutes pointing out constellations to each other, forgetting half the names and making them up as you go along before he suddenly changes the subject (its normal for him to jump from one topic to another and you've learned to roll with it.
***** asks you if you want to leave Twinleaf some day and see the rest of Sinnoh. you don't even need to think about your answer to that, cheerfully promising him you'll both go on an adventure of your own one day.
he grins so wide it must hurt his cheeks and agrees with you. you'll get your own Pokemon partners someday and become the best Trainers in the region- no, the whole world! so, he continues and points at your face, you better be ready to become a Trainer when he is, or he'll fine you 1000! no wait, 10000! no no wait, 100000! yeah, he'll fine you 100000 if you're late!
you don't laugh even though you kind of want to, instead holding your pinkie finger out. let's make it a promise, you say, that you'll become Trainers together. everyone knows you can't break a pinkie promise, so it will definitely happen. he locks his pinkie with yours and you make the promise. it wouldn't feel right to start any adventure without him there with you, so your promise is earnest and heartfelt.
and it's at that exact moment you nearly fall off the roof, as Gabby abruptly starts squawking "TIME TO GO IN, TIME TO GO IN" at the top of her lungs.
...next time, you're asking for Prissy to come up with you instead. ]
content: The Resort Area always has such a relaxed vibe, you think as you exit the Pokemon Center and stretch your arms above your head. It's kind of surprising when you think about it, given how many Coordinators come here to boast about their Ribbons and Pokemon but then again, most of them spend their time in the Ribbon Syndicate instead of outside. As you start to walk along the road, you're startled out of your thoughts by a man waving at you from up a flight of stairs. You point to yourself to make sure it's you he's waving at and he nods, beckoning you over.
When you jog up the stairs you spot a house behind him, just as the man starts to speak in a stage whisper. "Psst, hey, traveler! Yes, you! I want you to have this Villa!" You stare at him for a few long seconds before he realizes how sketchy that sounds and flails his hands in front of him. "Oh, wait, no, no, no! It's not what you're thinking!" He protests. "This is no scam, see. In fact, you'll be doing me a favor!" You ask him what he means and he seems relieved you're still willing to hear him out. "See, I was given this Villa. But, to be honest, I don't need it, either. So don't say a word. Just nod and this Villa is yours!"
You think on it for a minute. Sure, the set up sounds sketchy, but this guy sounds sincere and earnest and you're curious to see what the Villa looks like up close... You nod in agreement and his face lights up with a grin.
"Whew, that's a load off my mind!" He laughs and scratches the back of his head. "The original owner was from Hoenn, see? The owner collected up all the rare stones of Sinnoh and went back home. I somehow got saddled with this place as if it were some gift. There's no figuring what rich folks will think of next." He shrugs. "Still, I thank you for helping me out. Come with me, will you?"
He turns around and heads for the Villa's front door, so you follow on his heels, noting the Berry patch and mini pool in awe. The outside alone is like a home from a magazine or one of those reality shows... When the two of you reach the door, he gestures to everything around you. "None too shabby, you have to agree. Step inside for a look-see." He opens the door and heads in ahead of you.
The interior is... Absolutely, totally empty. He clears his throat awkwardly and starts talking again. "The original owner's furniture is gone, and I didn't buy any. So, yeah, I know, it's barren. Still, not bad, eh?" This... This is great! There's so much space, so much room to decorate and design and make it just the way you want it without having to move anyone else's stuff out of the way! While you spin around in delight you only half hear everything else he says. "But anyway, I feel kind of bad imposing the place on you for nothing." (Impose, he says, like you wouldn't have said no if you weren't interested in it.) "I'll tell you what, order a table from this order form. That'll do as my thanks to you!"
He pulls a form out of his pocket and you quickly read it. There are a few kinds to choose from, but for now you'll go with something simple and check off a square. A matter of seconds later, one of his Pokemon is flying the form to the business and an hour after that, some workers move the table in; You spend the wait chatting with your new friend (Theo, he says his name is) about Contests and battling and learn and learn he's from Unova and came here to check out Sinnoh battle styles (honestly, what kind of foreigner dumps a house on another foreigner?? how rude).
When the delivery crew (consisting of a man and a Machoke) carry in your table, they set it down very carefully in the exact spot you point to. "Thank you for waiting! I'm delivering your order! We hope you'll keep ordering quality furnishings from us!" The man tips his head politely, and leaves after you thank him for delivering your table so quickly.
Theo chuckles. "The furniture place's service is great. They're real eager for business. Look, they left another order form on the Table they delivered." He points to the table and you glance over your shoulder. Sure enough, there's another form there just waiting to be filled out. "Anyway," he starts again. "I'm finally rid of this Villa thanks to you. Now I can go back to traveling like I always wanted." He promises to send you a postcard when he gets to Johto and heads out the door with a spring in his step.
...Exactly seven seconds later, ***** charges in the door. "Hey, ****! You got yourself a Villa now?" How on earth did he find out in the span of a couple seconds?! He looks around and whistles, ignoring your disbelief. "Woohoo, that's wicked awesome! You must be rich! Gimme something!" You try to tell him someone gave it to you but he, of course, doesn't give you a chance. "Ok, this is what I'm gonna do." (You hope that thing isn't asking to crash on the couch you don't even have yet.) "I'll tell everybody you got a Villa!"
... ... ...
Wait, he's going to do what?! You don't even have anything more than a table in here yet, you can't have visitors! You try to grab him by the scarf to stop him but just miss him. You chase him out the door just in time to see him taking off on his Staraptor. Dammit, there's no way you'll be able to catch him now...
...Well, it looks like you'll have to start decorating even sooner than you thought.
what is learned: ● wow that guy sure did give me a house ● somehow, my childhood friend found out about my house in the span of a few seconds???
content: The Eterna City Gym is just as beautiful as you expected it would be, full of beautiful flowers in full bloom and so brightly lit you would think you were outside if you didn't know better. Next to you, the Gym Leader herself explains how her Gym works (in order to face her, you need to defeat all the other trainers present) and mentions your friend ***** had already come here and told her about you before heading to her spot to await your arrival. You take a minute to marvel at the beauty of the Gym before you step forward to begin your challenge.
The Leader's students are all girls who specialize in Grass type Pokemon, just like their mentor, so you rely on your shiny Luxio Tova instead of Arlen (your Prinplup) to avoid putting him through the type disadvantage; He's not happy about it but he understands. Tova gives each battle her all, enduring Poison and Paralysis until you can use an item to heal the effect. Every battle teaches you something new about Grass types and their moves: They have useful status ailment moves like Stun Spore, Poison Sting and Sleep Powder and can drain their opponent's energy with moves like Leech Seed on top of having straightforward attacks. By the time you reach their Leader, you realize a drawn out battle with her would definitely end in her favor if her Pokemon have ailment moves like her students' and start to plan for a fast win.
With that in mind you give Tova a Cheri Berry to hold onto, in case she gets Paralyzed and switch up your tactics; Taking time to set up for harder hits at a slower pace would risk prolonging the battle, so you'll change it to total offense. Confident your plan will work, you hop up the steps to greet the Master of Vivid Plant Pokemon.
Your talk lasts just a few seconds, both of you eager to see what the other team can do. The battle itself is... hard. Your plan to blitz her works well enough on her Cherrim and Turtwig but her Roserade is her strongest and makes full use of its Stun Spore and Poison Sting. It's a lucky break that the spores miss most of the time and Poison sting only poisons Tova once, really.
In the end you win by a respectable margin and Tova couldn't be happier with herself, prancing in triumphant circles around you. Your own heart is pounding furiously in your chest, a hard and fast 'thump thump thump', and you feel so proud of your Pokemon and yourself. It takes effort to not throw your arms around Tova and hug her until Gardenia finishes congratulating you.
Smiling, she calls you tough and says your Pokemon's strength is a measure of how much you love them, and in recognition of that bond she wants to give you a token along with the Forest Badge you've earned. The gift is TM86, the move Grass Knot (grass snares your opponent and trips them, dealing more damage the heavier they are) and you tuck it away with the rest of your TMs for later.
As Gardenia finishes talking the clock hands behind you move again to form a straight line back to the entrance/exit but before you go you finally fling your arms around Tova's neck and hug her tightly, thanking her for her hard work and laughing.
notes: - Gardenia's Gym has a pretty cute mechanic going on: whenever you beat one of the Trainers there, the clock hands turn to make a path to the next person you need to battle. - at this point, her team consists of Arlen the Prinplup, Tova the Luxio and an Egg. the only Pokemon to battle in this memory is Tova, since Arlen would get wiped going up against Grass types and the Egg barely moves at all. It's pretty obvious she obtained it recently and that its nowhere near ready to hatch.
content: You're in a weird room, one with a bunch of household appliances and a law mower set up in a neat row. They haven't been used in a while, you note and pull your finger along the top of the washing machine - it leaves a clear trail in the layer of dust covering the machine. It also makes your finger filthy so you wipe it off as you look around.
Cold and industrial, just like the rest of this base, and no signs of being used for months... There's even a couple notebooks left laying open. You go to the one farthest away from you, flipping through the pages until a series of entries catch your eye. They talk about Pokemon named Rotom, and a kid who befriended it. You close the notebook (which you notice now looks old and worn) with care and set it down.
Still... what's something like that doing here of all places...?
content: You're making your way through a the maze that is Hearthome Gym, tiptoeing along so you can avoid drawing attention from the Gym's trainers. It specializes in Ghost types, you remember, and it's kind of obvious thanks to the dozens of Duskull lamps that make the walls of the maze.
You battle the Gym trainers when you come across them, to get a good idea of the strategy you should prepare for the Leader. Ghost types are immune to Fighting and Normal type attacks and have an advantage over Psychic types, but are weak to Dark type moves and are vulnerable to Ghost type moves themselves. You don't have a Ghost type with you, so you focus on attacking with Tova (your shiny Luxio); she knows some Dark type moves that will make things easier. You switch for others whenever she looks tired, either Arlen (your Prinplup) or Adelinde (a Gible), the newest addition to your team.
The Gym trainers and their Pokemon give you some trouble with status effects like confusion and burn but you beat them (and are thankful you always have a stockpile of stat clear items).
When you enter the last room, you're standing before Fantina, the Gym Leader and... honestly, you're kind of starstruck. You've seen her and Loony (her Drifloon) in Contests on TV and she's even cooler in person, all confidence and poise.
"Ohohoho!! Finally, you have arrived!" Fantina looks delighted and claps her hands twice. "Since I came to this country, always I try to learn new things. They hold Contests in this city? I say to myself, enfin, I will excel. That's why I dress this way. C'est une performance!" She tells you a bit about herself, peppering another language into her speech (you think it's Kalosian and make a note to check it out later), and strikes a dynamic pose. "Also I study Pokémon very much. I have come to be Gym Leader. And, uh, so it shall be that you challenge me. But I shall win. That's what a Gym Leader does, non?" She winks at you and the battle begins.
She's a strong Trainer with strong Pokemon so you struggle a little in the beginning but keep calm and eventually win with Tova shaking her head to clear away the lingering Confusion. "You are so fantastically strong. I know now why I have lost." You hear Fantina say as you promise to get Tova her favorite for supper tonight before recalling her so she can rest.
Fantina's eye shine with excitement and she gestures in excitement as she speaks. "I am dumbfounded! So very, very strong! You, your Pokémon, so strong!" She points at you dramatically for a moment before turning her hand palm up and offering you a badge. "Your power is admirable! I shall honor it with this Gym Badge!" You accept it and hold it tightly; The Relic Badge is your third one and it brings you one step closer to being able to challenge the League.
"Three Gym Badges..." Fantina murmurs thoughtfully, then steps closer to you. "But you must not forget this. There are many other trainers. Strong Trainers, too. There are many more in Sinnoh. Have patience! You must become stronger, one at a time."
You thank her for her advice and say goodbye, and she points you to the warp panel that will return you to the entrance. You slot the Relic Badge into your Badge Case as you walk to it, and hope you'll get to battle Fantina again sometime.
what is learned: ● who Fantina is ● more about Ghost types ● exactly four words of Kalosian (PokeFrench) but not what the words mean
other notes: ● the Hearthome Gym is honestly pretty creepy/weird but Sparrow doesn't even think of it as creepy. ● Fantina is a performer and it shows; her hair and outfit are bold and attention grabbing and she makes very grand gestures when it'll be most dramatic.
content: This is a shard that consists of nothing but dressing Pokemon up in various accessories. The Pokemon have as much fun as she has, and most of the time they actually look good. The rest of the time she's deliberately dressing them up to look ridiculous.
content: You're at the Battleground, a large building with an open space for Pokemon battles. A handful of familiar people (though you don't yet remember where you know them from) are waiting around at the tables and you know they're waiting for a challenge and the excitement of battling these people again puts a spring in your step as you approach a girl with a white bow in her dark hair and greet her.
She looks up from the mug in her hands and you think she looks pleasantly surprised. "...Oh? A battle? With me?" She asks. You grin and nod, saying you came here to see her and battle her. Again, she seems pleasantly surprised and stands up, setting her mug on the table. "...OK. I... won't lose...!"
The next few minutes are a blur of a heated Pokemon battle between her Pokemon (a Ninjask, an Electrode, a Crobat, a Weavile and an Arcanine) and your own (an Empoleon, a Luxray, a Garchomp, a Togekiss and a Spiritomb). It's exhilarating and breathtaking and you're laughing the longer the battle goes on because it's fun, it's the most wonderful thing in the world to get to know someone and their Pokemon better through a battle, and when you catch sight of your opponent's face, you know she's having just as much fun.
When the dust settles, you're the victor and you recall your final battler and promise your team their favorites for lunch before turning your attention to the girl and tell her you had fun battling her today with a smile.
She glances down at her hands for a moment before looking at you again. "...I might like battling with you. ...Just a little. Only a tiny bit." She says and your heart skips a beat to know the feeling is mutual.
content: Iron Island is very... boring to look at, you think as you hop off the boat onto the short wharf, so it's a good thing you're here to train and not sightsee. You run up the stairs (taking them two at a time) and give the small house next to the second set a curious look - Does someone live here? You decide to check it out before you leave later and keep moving toward the abandoned mine, only to slow down when you see a man standing in front of the entrance. You walk up beside him and look up (way up, he's much taller than you) at him, cheerfully saying "Hi!"
He turns to face you, adjusting his snazzy hat and you kinda stare at him for a couple seconds. "...You are?" He asks in a quiet, calm voice and smiles when you introduce yourself as ****. "OK, you're ****. I'm Riley." He notices your staring but misinterprets it. "I'm a Trainer, yes, and it is a bit odd that I would be training here." You shake your head and tell him you're here to train too; Riley looks surprised for a moment before he smiles again, pleased with your answer. "Anyway, it's always nice to meet another Trainer. Here's a gift." He holds out a disk and you take it, almost dropping it when you realize it's an HM: HM04, Strength, used to move heavy boulders out of the way. Riley mentions what it is and that you'll need Canalave Gym's badge to use it, only to trail off into a chuckle as you promptly pull your badge case out and show him the Mine Badge shining in it. "My bad." He apologizes with another smile and glances at the cave entrance. "I'll be training inside. You can join me if you'd like." He vanishes through the entrance, and you linger where you are long enough to make sure your supplies are in order before you head in yourself.
It's dark in the cave, enough to be annoying but not enough to warrant using Flash. You have to squint for a couple minutes until your eyes adjust and you're surprised to see rusty steel drums and girders still left laying around - it all must have been left behind when the mining operation closed down. You fish a Repel from your bag and spray yourself with it before you start running around and map the place out in your head. This path leads to a dead end, there's a path that's blocked off over there, and the way forward involves a couple sets of makeshift steps... You note anything you can use as a marker and keep moving, battling wild Pokemon and other Trainers alike along the way. You get turned around a couple times, when you misremember the right path, but that's all part of the fun of exploring a new place.
When you reach what you think is the lowest level, Riley is waiting nearby and walks up to you. "****, I'm glad to see you here. If you don't mind, let's team up." He looks around and you do the same, noticing the Pokemon on this level look like they're on edge. "The Pokemon seem to be restless," Riley confirms with a frown. You agree to partner up with him, worried about what wound the Pokemon up like this. "If your Pokemon get hurt, I'll heal them up." He assures you, and the two of you start off.
Things are pretty quiet at first. You run into a few Trainers along the way and double battle them, finding you and Riley make a pretty good team and that your Pokemon get along well with his Lucario. Between battles, the two of you chat and he mentions Byron (the Leader of Canalave Gym) asked him to become a Gym Leader; You're impressed, but Riley turned the offer down out of consideration for Roark, Byron's son. At one point, he wonders if battling a trainer with the same type specialization as you would be like fighting yourself, since it's harder to beat yourself than anyone else. You keep your end the conversations going, telling him about the Gyms you've beaten and how you don't have a specialization since you couldn't imagine only training a certain type. You like him, he's smart
The chatting stops when you spot two Team Galactic Grunts hanging around ahead of you and you groan, "Not them again." Riley looks at you in surprise and then frowns again as he sees the look on your face. He's the first to step up to them, eyes narrowed, and both of them jump like they didn't expect to see anyone here (and they probably didn't). "I get it now." He says as you step up to his side. "You're responsible for agitating the Pokemon. I don't care what good reason you may have," he cuts one Grunt off the moment he opens his mouth. "But I don't want you bringing any trouble into the mine."
The Grunt glowers at both of you. "We're Team Galactic!" He declares. "We'll take all the Pokemon we want! Isn't that right, partner?" He turns to the other Grunt who nods emphatically. "You said it, brother! So that's what we're gonna do. We're abducting all the Pokemon from this rusted-out Iron Island!" The second Grunt puffs up with pride and promptly withers a bit when he notices the furious stares you and Riley are giving him and his friend. You've yet to meet a member of Team Galactic that didn't make you either confused or angry.
"To share in all the joys and all the sorrows..." Riley says quietly, voice full of anger and distain. "That is how all the Trainers and Pokemon live in Sinnoh! I won't allow anyone to defy that code of ethics! Come on, ****! This is one battle we can't lose!" You exchange a look and nod, grabbing your Pokeball as the battle starts.
The Grunts aren't bat at battling, but they're no match for you and Riley, fueled as you are by your anger at their mistreatment of Pokemon. Their teams fall in front of your Arlen and Riley's Lucario and they complain that the two of you and your Pokemon are too tough a combination to defeat as they recall their Pokemon and flee. Once they're out of sight, Riley breathes a sigh of relief and faces you with a wide smile. "Thanks. You really helped me out." You tell him you're glad you could help him defend the Pokemon that live here and your words seem to convince him of something. "Listen, I have a Pokemon Egg here. Would you take it with you?" You're startled by the sudden offer but you nod and say yes with a stammer. "Thanks!" He passes the Egg to you and you carefully hold it in your arms. "I'd like you to show the Pokemon that's inside the Egg all sorts of new places."
You promise you'll take good care of it and he smiles even more. "Spending time with you was very enjoyable. I intend to test my skills in other places from now on. Let's meet again!" You say you'll definitely see him again some day and he chuckles. "Take care on the way out." He tells you, and waves as you step onto the elevator down; You wave back, of course, and run through the rest of the cave with new excitement in your steps and your heart beating quick in your chest.
notes: ● by the time the memory ends, she has one hell of a crush on Riley and it's probably obvious to anyone who sees the memory. she stares at him at first because he's good looking and after battling the Grunts and being given a Pokemon Egg she thinks he's cool and handsome and a good person. ● while she battles exclusively with Arlen, her Empoleon, the rest of her team consists of Tova the Luxray, Esen the Togekiss, Patil the Eevee and Adelinde the Gabite. ● she takes Riley's declaration of sharing joys and sorrows being the way they do things in Sinnoh to heart and thinks he's right! the philosophy behind it resonates with her, sorta.
content: You're participating in a Contest with your Drapion, Adoncia! There's a dress up segment where you dress her up in cute accessories, a dancing segment (which is exactly what it sounds like) and an acting segment where Pokemon show off their moves!
You put your heart into picking the right accessories, cuing her for the right dance steps and choosing the best moves to use to showcase Adoncia's coolness to the judges (Jordan, Dexter and Keira).
There are spotlights, ridiculously dangerous looking moves being used and fired off into the air in front of the audience and judges for display and so much cheering and clapping it's almost deafening.
When all three parts are over, the judges announce the winners, starting from last place. You hold your breath and Adoncia skitters nervously beside you until the very second you're declared the winning pair.
Confetti rains down and the spotlight focuses on you both with the crowd going absolutely crazy but you honestly don't notice it much at first - You're too busy hugging Adoncia, arms around her long neck as she hisses happily. You pull yourself back onto your feet after a minute, dusting your knees off and accept the prize Ribbon from Dexter before turning to the crowd to wave with Adoncia.
notes: ● this is a Pokemon Contest! it takes place in a big ass building solely for Contests. Trainers who participate in Contests are called Coordinators! There are five kinds of Contests, this one was a Cool Contest. ● in Contests, focus is on the Pokemon! Coordinators guide the Pokemon to show their full appeal and avoid stealing the spotlight themselves, and they do dress up and look good so they don't get attention in a bad way. ● Dawn is wearing a really cute dress so she looks the part of a Coordinator. ● during the dancing segment, she is absolutely dancing along as her cues to Adoncia. it's very cute and she has a lot of fun. ● Info on Adoncia: Drapion, female, Lonely nature. moves: Cross Poison (poison type, cool); Payback (dark type, cool); Iron Tail (steel type, cool); Dark Pulse (dark type, cool). she's a bit shy but also loves being on stage! she's pretty good at battling too but likes performing more, so she takes part in Contests now instead.

content: a young man about Sparrow's age (and familiar, if one has seen some of her earlier memories) prepares to bolt into tall grass.
Rowan puzzles over where something is until a boy in a snazzy red beret runs up behind him with a briefcase he left behind. the new boy starts when Rowan explains that he plans to give Sparrow and her friend their own Pokemon and says something about the Pokemon they brought with them being crucial. it makes the blond boy happy to hear that, and he has a stupid grin on his face (one that mirrors the grin Sparrow can't fight back either) as he tells Sparrow she can choose first. after meeting the three Pokemon in the briefcase (a Turtwig, a Chimchar and a Piplup), she picks the Piplup with an overwhelming sense of happiness at this precious first meeting. as she holds the Pokeball with her new partner in it to her chest, the boy chooses the Turtwig and the Professor addresses them both again.
he congratulates them on their excellent choices (though she thinks there's no such thing as a bad choice when it comes to Pokemon), and explains that the Pokemon in their care are unfamiliar with the world at large, just like their new Trainers, so he hopes that they'll do well together (learn together and grow together, become stronger and wiser together). he invites them to visit his lab in Sandgem if they run into any trouble before he leaves with the beret boy following behind him.
as they watch him walk away, the blond boy comments that Professor Rowan is actually very nice, much different from the stern and scary person he seems to be on TV.
the only name that isn't blurred out is Professor Rowan's.
effects: ● will be more cautious before doing something she knows is dangerous
● increased diligence in caring for the team Pokemon
● this well respected professor saw something in us that impressed him!! self-confidence boost.

content: You are in Canalave City during the morning, entering a small house near the docks (without knocking, or knowing the inhabitants, which feels like a normal thing to do).

You're even more excited now than you were before; The goal you've been chasing since you began your journey is right there waiting for you, and--
The memory ends right there, before the battle ends.

content: Marley stands to your left, staring at the huge white tablet ahead of you (Professor Oak is there too, of course, but he might as well not be as far as Marley is concerned).
TRIVPOS;
you spend a few minutes pointing out constellations to each other, forgetting half the names and making them up as you go along before he suddenly changes the subject (its normal for him to jump from one topic to another and you've learned to roll with it.

Dammit, there's no way you'll be able to catch him now...
...Well, it looks like you'll have to start decorating even sooner than you thought.
what is learned: ● wow that guy sure did give me a house
● somehow, my childhood friend found out about my house in the span of a few seconds???

content: The Eterna City Gym is just as beautiful as you expected it would be, full of beautiful flowers in full bloom and so brightly lit you would think you were outside if you didn't know better.

NEUPOS;
content: You're making your way through a the maze that is Hearthome Gym, tiptoeing along so you can avoid drawing attention from the Gym's trainers.
You slot the Relic Badge into your Badge Case as you walk to it, and hope you'll get to battle Fantina again sometime.
what is learned: ● who Fantina is
● more about Ghost types
● exactly four words of Kalosian (PokeFrench) but not what the words mean
other notes: ● the Hearthome Gym is honestly pretty creepy/weird but Sparrow doesn't even think of it as creepy.
● Fantina is a performer and it shows; her hair and outfit are bold and attention grabbing and she makes very grand gestures when it'll be most dramatic.

content: You're at the Battleground, a large building with an open space for Pokemon battles.
Only a tiny bit." She says and your heart skips a beat to know the feeling is mutual.
...Are you seeing things, or is she blushing?
SIGPOS; iron island adventures with riley
